In the second half of June, the results of the school exams will be known. What should a student do if they are not satisfied with the grade received for a particular exam? Is there a practice in Latvia for appealing exam results? Is retaking allowed if the student did not meet the requirements the first time?

As an expert on the portal bb.lv, senior expert of the communication and publicity department of the State Education Development Agency Jana Weinberga states:

– If a student is not satisfied with the grade received on a centralized exam, they have the right to submit a request to the State Education Development Agency (SEDA) to review the exam result. Regarding the centralized exams for the 9th grade, the appeal can be submitted until July 25, 2026, and for the results of the centralized exams of secondary school until August 2, 2026.

Such a request can be submitted by the student themselves if they are of legal age. If not, the appeal is submitted by the parents of the minor student.

The request is considered within a month from the date of submission. The electronically signed request should be sent to the email [email protected] or to the official electronic address of SEDA.

Within one academic year, the corresponding centralized exam can only be taken once. If the minimum passing score is not achieved on the centralized exam of secondary school in the 11th grade, this exam can be retaken at the same level in the 12th grade. However, it should be noted that in one academic year, a centralized exam for one subject can only be taken at one level.

If a sufficient grade is not obtained in the centralized exams of the basic school, the student continues their studies for another academic year in the 9th grade, and at the end of the repeated academic year, they retake the centralized exams for which the grade was below the minimum threshold (in 2026, this is 15%).

If only one exam is failed, the student can start studying in separate vocational education programs (duration of study is 3 years). In the following academic year, they can retake the centralized exam for the subject they did not pass the first time.
