The initiative to rename Victory Park in Riga has sparked mixed reactions from residents. The survey revealed not only attitudes towards a possible name change but also that a significant part of society has a misunderstanding of which historical event the park was named after.
The petition to rename Victory Park to Sun Park continues to gather signatures on the portal Manabalss.lv.
Against this backdrop, the program "900 seconds" (TV3) decided to find out whether residents support such an idea and how well they know the history of one of the most famous parks in the capital.
The survey results showed that only 38% of residents in Latvia correctly identified the origin of the park's current name. This is the percentage of respondents who know that the park was named in honor of the victory of the Latvian army over Bermont's troops during the War of Liberation.
At the same time, an even greater number of respondents — 41% — believe that the name is related to the victory of the Allies over Nazi Germany in World War II.
This means that the majority of survey participants are either mistaken or uncertain about the historical origin of the name.
The survey also revealed more unexpected answers.
1% of respondents associated the park's name with the bronze medals of the Latvian national hockey team at the World Championship and with the accession of the Baltic States to the European Union and NATO.
As for the renaming itself, residents also did not reach a consensus. Half of the survey participants — 50% — believe that the current name should be preserved. 25% of respondents supported the renaming. Another quarter of those surveyed admitted that they have not yet formed their own opinion on this issue.
The discussion around the park's name has been ongoing for several years and periodically returns to the public agenda. The current survey shows that the issue remains sensitive, and the historical context of the name is still little known to many residents.
While the initiative is gathering signatures, the majority of residents in Latvia are in favor of preserving the current name of Victory Park.
