Political technologist, political commentator, and author of the YouTube channel Titava Laboratorija Dans Titavs shared his views on the Russian residents of Latvia and the reasons for the distrust that, in his opinion, persists in Latvian society during the program "Accent."

Titavs noted that Latvia's historical experience continues to influence the perception of Russians among many Latvians. According to him, this is not about any public statements or the need to demonstrate political views, but about deeply rooted fears related to the country's past and the fear of a possible new occupation.

In response to the question of why the attitude towards the Russian-speaking population in Estonia often appears less painful, Titavs expressed the opinion that Estonians have never experienced such a strong fear of losing their national identity as a result of Russification. In Latvia, however, such concerns have existed for decades and persist to this day.

According to the commentator, for a small nation, the issue of preserving language and culture is perceived as a matter of survival. He emphasized that there are about a million Latvians, so any threats to national identity are perceived particularly acutely.

At the same time, Titavs believes that the negative attitude of many Latvians towards the Russian language has largely intensified in recent years under the influence of Russian aggression against Ukraine.
