The State Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) received a total of nine calls by 6 PM on Thursday regarding places where fallen trees had blocked the roads.
At noon, a call was received in the Preili region, and in the afternoon - in Riga. After 5:30 PM, seven more calls were received about trees broken by the wind blocking the roads: three in the Jekabpils region and one each in Jurmala, Madona, Kraslava, and Liva regions.
In the Bebrene parish of the Augsdaugava region, the wind tore off a large fragment of the roof from the Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist.
The company "Pasažieru vilciens" reported that wind damage is causing delays in train traffic in some places, as trees have fallen on the tracks.
Today, a thunderstorm front is crossing Latvia from south to north and northeast. Meteorologists have issued an orange warning for possible heavy rain, destructive gusts of wind, and hail. In some areas, large hail and tornadoes are also possible.
