The contemporary art performance held at Riga's Anglican Church of the Savior sparked widespread public resonance. After the publication of videos and photographs, church representatives stated that they were shocked by what they saw and considered such content unacceptable for a sacred space.

A discussion has erupted in Riga surrounding a contemporary art performance that took place at the Anglican Church of the Savior as part of the international performance art festival "Starptelpa."

Particularly strong reactions were provoked by videos and photographs that circulated on social media, depicting naked participants of the performance and scenes that many users deemed provocative for a church setting.

The performance, titled "Bald Boys," was created by artist Andris Freibergs.

According to the event description, the performance was intended for adult audiences only. Its goal was to draw attention to the issue of sexual crimes, which in recent years have been associated with representatives of religious organizations.

After the footage spread widely online, the Anglican Church issued an official statement. Parish representatives emphasized that the church did not participate in the creation or organization of the performance and merely rented the space to the festival.

"We are deeply shocked and saddened," the parish statement said.

The church noted that concerts and cultural events had previously taken place in the building, organized by those who respected the characteristics of the sacred space. According to parish representatives, when agreeing to the festival, they expected participants to consider the nature of the venue.

"Art can be provocative, but it must respect the space in which it occurs. Especially if that space is the House of God," the church stated.

The festival organizers position "Starptelpa" as an international platform for performance and experimental art. The Anglican Church was designated as one of the main festival locations in the event program.

The discussion itself quickly extended beyond the specific event.

For part of society, what happened became an example of the unacceptable use of religious space. Social media comments included terms like "blasphemy," "offending the faithful," and "madness." Other participants in the discussion called for consideration of the artistic context and reminded that it was not about a worship service or religious ritual, but about a contemporary art festival.

The debate essentially boiled down to a broader question: where is the line between an artist's creative freedom and respect for sacred spaces.

After the incident, the church stated that it would be much more careful in evaluating the content of events held in its premises in the future.
