A gray aspen over 100 years old was extracted from the Riga city canal, reported the municipal company Rīgas meži.

Several pieces of equipment were used to lift the tree.

The cleanup of the steep slope along the canal will continue throughout the week. During the work, remaining branches and wood will also be extracted from the canal.

As reported by company representative Ieva Geistere, the story of the gray aspen does not end here. The trunk of the tree will be placed in one of the areas managed by "Rīgas meži" to remind of both the historical trees of Riga and the importance of biodiversity in the urban environment.

As previously reported, last week a gray aspen over 100 years old fell into the Riga Canal opposite the Latvian National Opera. The circumference of the tree trunk reached four meters.

Possible causes of the fall include the steep slope, beaver burrows, and partial root rot.
