On May 24, 2026, the memory of Saints Cyril and Methodius, the 'parents' of the Russian alphabet, is celebrated.

What Orthodox Christians remember on May 24, 2026

Cyril and Methodius were biological brothers born into a noble Byzantine family in the city of Thessalonica (now a Greek city). Methodius was the oldest of seven brothers, while Constantine (who became Cyril in monasticism) was the youngest.

When the younger brother turned 12, the children were orphaned. The youngest son was sent to be raised by the priest Theoctistus — a very influential and high-ranking official in the patriarchal office. The young man shone with talents and received the best education that could be offered to him at that time. While still very young, he decided to become a clergyman.

Cyril held the honorable position of keeper of the library of the cathedral Orthodox church — Saint Sophia. He dreamed of a secluded life in a monastery, but by the emperor's decree, he was forced to lead a public life, traveling to cities and countries to participate in theological debates and deliver sermons.

Methodius dedicated the first part of his life to a military career and rose to the rank of ruler of one of the Slavic principalities subordinate to Byzantium. He held this position for 10 years and during that time learned the Slavic language very well. Then he took monastic vows and began to serve in one of the monasteries on Mount Olympus. His younger brother was able to move there after some time.

A group of like-minded individuals gathered around them, who began to contemplate the idea of creating a Slavic alphabet. It, according to their plan, could simplify the transition of the Slavic pagans inhabiting the lands included in the Byzantine Empire to Christianity. And when Prince Rostislav called them to Moravia (the territory of modern-day Czech Republic) to preach Orthodoxy, it became quite clear that it would be more difficult to do this without writing. The brothers created an alphabet and translated the main liturgical books from Greek to Slavic.

They then requested permission from the Pope to preach and serve in churches in Slavic. All of this gave an incredible impetus not only to the spread of Christianity but also to the development of the entire region. Cyril fell ill in Rome, took monastic vows, and passed away, while Methodius returned to Moravia, where he was elected bishop.
