This weekend, serious traffic restrictions will be introduced in Riga due to the "Riga Rimi Marathon." The most extensive closures are expected on Sunday, when restrictions will affect the bridges over the Daugava and the central streets of the capital.

During the Riga Marathon, which will take place on May 16 and 17, there will be significant traffic restrictions in Riga.

As reported by the Riga City Council, the closures will begin on the evening of Friday, May 15.

Throughout the event, traffic on certain sections of the streets will be gradually closed — depending on the timing of the races at different distances.

The embankment of November 11 will remain completely closed for the entire duration of the marathon.

On Saturday, the restrictions will be relatively minor. Traffic will be temporarily halted on the "DPD Mile" race route — from the Art Museum to the Freedom Monument.

The main difficulties for drivers are expected on Sunday.

On this day, at different times, traffic will be restricted or completely closed both in the center of Riga and on the bridges over the Daugava.

What is important to know: streets are promised to be opened as quickly as possible — immediately after the last participants run the corresponding section of the distance. However, throughout the day, traffic in the city may change very dynamically.

Drivers are advised to plan their routes in advance and consider possible delays.

For navigation during the marathon, city authorities recommend using the Waze app, which will display current closures and information about street openings.

The marathon traditionally becomes one of the largest sporting events in the capital and annually gathers thousands of participants and spectators, but at the same time significantly affects traffic in the city.

Residents of central Riga and those planning trips across the bridges should be especially cautious this weekend.
