Journalist and television host Vladimir Molchanov passed away at the age of 76. His show 'Before and After Midnight' became a symbol of freedom, and the host himself became the face of perestroika for millions of people across the former USSR.
In Latvia, the death of Molchanov has been decided to be silenced. Well-known Latvian journalist Andrei Shavrey, writing for the public media of Latvia LSM, unexpectedly faced a refusal to publish an article about the passing of Vladimir Molchanov.
Here’s how Shavrey described the unpleasant situation:
“Vladimir Molchanov has died. I suggested to the state portal LSM to publish a memorial article titled 'The Author of the Melodies of the Riga Ghetto Has Died'. A stunning documentary in which Vladimir Kirilovich, who tracked down Nazis, interviewed the last surviving victims of the Latvian Holocaust. In that film, the son of a prisoner, Gidon Kremer, spoke, and Mendel Bash sang for Inese Galante. Molchanov explored the most secret corners of the Riga ghetto, naming all those responsible.
By the way, he was the first on Soviet TV to break the footage of the capture of the Vilnius television center in January 1991. This is a person who made an invaluable contribution to the establishment of democracy. He was immensely respected by Raimonds Pauls.
Unfortunately, the publication of the material about Molchanov has been refused, as he is 'not local'. Such times.”
About Molchanov’s Film “Melodies of the Riga Ghetto”
“May their souls be joined to the repository of life...” This epigraph, reminding us of the El Maleh Rachamim prayer, which Jews recite for their deceased, precedes the documentary film “Melodies of the Riga Ghetto.” 65 years ago, in November and December 1941, over two days, during two “actions,” the Nazis exterminated about 30,000 people in the Riga ghetto...
In one day, July 4, 1941, known in history as “Kristallnacht,” eight synagogues were burned in Riga, the capital of Latvia. The main synagogue was destroyed by the Nazis along with the 300 worshippers inside.
