For the maintenance and development of drainage infrastructure in Jūrmala, the municipal budget has allocated 1.47 million euros this year, the municipality reported to the LETA agency.
In February, work began in Jūrmala to survey and clean the drainage system, and emergency situations that arose in the drainage infrastructure are being addressed. In several areas of the city, the cleaning of drainage ditches has already been completed.
This year, a total of 1.47 million euros has been allocated in the municipal budget for the maintenance of the drainage infrastructure and investments, which is 888,600 euros more than last year. Cleaning of drainage ditches is planned in 22 locations across all districts of Jūrmala in 2026, and cleaning of stormwater collectors is planned in 28 locations.
When preparing the work plan for the maintenance and cleaning of the drainage system for 2026, problematic situations from previous years were taken into account, and the most problematic areas that pose an increased threat and risk of flooding were selected, the municipality emphasized.
During the work, vegetation is removed, the cross-section of the ditches is restored using an excavator, and the drainage pipes are flushed with high-pressure jets. The stormwater pipelines are also flushed with high-pressure jets, and their technical condition is checked — using robotic cameras, diagnostics of sewage, water supply, and drainage systems is performed, documenting damages, blockages, or other discrepancies. Specialized equipment is used for these tasks.
The municipality emphasized that as a result of the completed work, the water capacity in the drainage systems and stormwater networks will improve, significantly reducing the risk of flooding in the areas.
The municipality urges landowners to clear the ditches on their property of vegetation and blockages, removing soil deposits, household waste, fallen trees, debris, beaver dams, as well as to clean or restore drainage pipes to ensure the free flow of water. These works can be carried out after June 30, when the bird nesting period ends.
For improper maintenance of drainage systems, which worsens the usability of land for other owners or legitimate users, as well as the operation of the drainage system, a monetary fine may be imposed.
