"There is no proletariat left in Grizinkalns or elsewhere in Riga" – the evolution of the former working-class neighborhoods of the capital is studied in Diena by writer Egils Zirnis.
The places known from Janis Grizins' popular children's book "The Republic of Voron'ya Street" (1928) and the film of the same name (1970) have now changed irreversibly.
"There are no more big sandy hills here, and the boys and girls on the fences and streets are also gone. What remains? The atmosphere in some district alleys, tidied up in recent years. In some of them, it feels like at least some scenes from 'The Republic of Voron'ya Street' could still be filmed here. Where there is such an atmosphere, there should also be taverns today...".
So now it is not a district of "warrior tribes," but a relaxed hipster place with various gourmet spots:
"A fish or seafood restaurant can now be found in Grizinkalns! At the corner of Murnieku and Lienes streets, you can enjoy various, as they say now, sea creatures and suitable accompaniments at white tables, each tastier than the last. Appetizers, soups, main courses, as well as a fridge filled with various homemade salads and snacks (including such items as baba ghanoush and guacamole) await diners.
We loved everything we ordered, but the standout was the fried anchovies. If you still thought that fried anchovies are unlikely to be particularly different from fried sprats, order the anchovies baked in the mayor's market, and we can guarantee that the joyful surprise will transform you from a local pond's newt into a flying fish emerging from the ocean of the world's best flavors!".
