Amendments to the Cabinet of Ministers' regulations on construction standards for electronic communication facilities have allowed for a step forward in organizing the infrastructure of aerial cables.

As reported by "Diena" from the City Development Department of the Riga City Council, the new regulations undoubtedly serve the interests of the capital, as they will allow for the dismantling of unused aerial lines and also strengthen the operational lines (if they were not built illegally). The municipality expects that the amendments will accelerate the dismantling of unused aerial networks.

Registering legally constructed aerial lines in the Information System of Territories with Burdens (ATIS) and the Information System of Construction (BIS) is also very important, as often even the cable owners doubt their ownership rights. It is important for Riga to dismantle so-called ownerless or abandoned cables, which unjustifiably burden building owners, but these issues are still under discussion.

The new rules are a consequence of the fact that in the 1990s the city did not pay enough attention to regulating aerial lines, with some lines being installed without projects or permits, which at that time created a competitive advantage over those operators who complied with all requirements. As a result, many areas of the city are covered with aerial lines.
