In the first two months of this year, Latvia recorded 1,761 newborns, which is 0.6% or ten fewer newborns than in the corresponding period of 2025, according to preliminary data from the Central Statistical Bureau.
In turn, in the first two months of this year, Latvia recorded 4,957 deaths, which is 9.2% or 419 more than in the first two months of 2025, when 4,538 deaths were recorded.
Thus, in the first two months of this year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 3,196, while in the same period of the previous year, the number of deaths exceeded the number of births by 2,767.
Even without considering migration, it is not difficult to calculate that by the end of this year, the country will lose the population of one major city by Latvian standards, such as Valmiera or, say, Jekabpils, each of which has about 20,000 residents.
