Storks have begun to return to Latvia — both white and black. This is evident, among other things, from the live broadcasts of the Latvian Nature Fund, where this week birds have appeared in the nests for the first time since winter.

Observations show that most other species being monitored online have already begun incubating their chicks, while storks are just starting the season and getting settled after their return.

In Tukums Municipality, white storks have started by restoring their nest. It had to be dismantled earlier as it became unsafe, so the birds are essentially building it anew.

A pair of white storks in Tukums Municipality is already known to viewers from last year's drama: the male and female had to throw two chicks out of the nest as they were unable to feed them.

Meanwhile, black storks have only recently appeared at their nest in the forests of Riga. The birds are currently surveying the area and assessing the condition of the site before beginning nesting.

Live broadcasts from the Latvian Nature Fund allow viewers to observe the lives of the birds in real time and mark the beginning of a new nesting season.

As part of the online observation project, it is now possible to monitor white and black storks, the white-tailed eagle, the northern goshawk, the lesser spotted eagle, the osprey, the Eurasian eagle-owl, the common kestrel, and other birds.

The Latvian Nature Fund is the largest environmental non-governmental organization in Latvia, whose mission is to conserve and restore the country's biodiversity. To achieve this, the fund engages in practical nature conservation and educates the public about the importance of biodiversity. Since 2012, the fund has been providing live broadcasts from the nests of protected birds in Latvia.
