A viewer of "Bez Tabu" (TV3), Juris, who has lived on the shores of Lake Dzirnezers in the Carnikava area since the 1980s, considers himself an avid fisherman. According to him, there are now reasons to believe that the number of fish in the lake, which connects with the legendary Gauja via the Dzirnupes, is beginning to decline. In his opinion, the cause of this is the project implemented by the municipality.

Juris recalls that several years ago, implementing a flood control plan and receiving the "green light" from the then Carnikava municipal council, not only a dam was built along the village of Sigulda, but locks were also constructed across the Dzirnupes, which simply close under certain conditions, reports TV3.

Available online street photos show what this place on the Dzirnupes looked like about 15 years ago. By 2019, the dam was fully raised, and last summer it was recorded that the locks were in a lowered position.

The locks are just part of what was once a large-scale project costing over four million euros. The operation and control of these hydraulic structures are now under the jurisdiction of the Adazi municipality agency "Carnikavas komunālserviss."

The Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR" emphasizes that the issue of fish resources and their reduction has been a long-standing problem. BIOR conducts inspections at least once a year in Dzirnezers, monitoring eels. It is impossible to count all fish, regardless of species. However, they state that any obstacle can affect the migration of aquatic inhabitants.

Fearing for the fish resources, residents can contact the relevant municipality, urging responsible parties to implement, for example, fish stocking in the water body.
