How many parents in Latvia have had their custody rights revoked? New figures

At the end of last year, there were 584 parents in Latvia who were deprived of custody rights by court decision, reports the Child Protection Center.

Of the total number of these individuals, 330 were men and 254 were women.

Additionally, 973 parents had their custody rights temporarily suspended by the orphan court. Among them were 516 men and 457 women.

According to the Civil Code, custody rights can be revoked from a parent if, due to their fault (intentional actions or negligence), the health or life of the child is at risk, as well as in cases where the parent maliciously abuses their rights or fails to provide care and supervision for the child, which may harm the physical, mental, or moral development of the child.

Custody over a child can also be revoked by the orphan court, but only under certain conditions and for a limited period, usually not exceeding one year.
