In Tukums Municipality, custody rights were revoked from 31 parents

In 2025, custody rights were revoked from 31 parents in Tukums Municipality, according to a report from the regional orphan court, LETA writes.

Last year, custody rights were terminated for 59 parents in the municipality, including 25 mothers and 34 fathers. These decisions affected 71 children. Data from the orphan court shows that custody rights were revoked again for ten mothers and eight fathers.

At the same time, custody rights were restored for 11 parents — eight mothers and three fathers. Custody rights were restored for 15 children.

Also, last year the orphan court decided to file a lawsuit to terminate custody rights for 22 parents — 17 mothers and five fathers. By court decision, custody rights over 45 children were revoked from 31 parents — 13 mothers and 18 fathers.

At the same time, one mother had her previously revoked custody rights restored for one child.

In 2025, the orphan court mandated 40 parents to eliminate unfavorable conditions for child development within a specified time frame in cooperation with the social service.

The orphan court makes a decision to terminate a parent's custody rights if there are actual obstacles preventing the parent from caring for the child, or if the child is in conditions dangerous to their health or life due to the parent's actions. Such a decision is also made if the parent abuses their rights or fails to provide care and supervision for the child, agrees to the adoption of the child, or if there is established violence by the parent against the child or reasonable suspicion of such violence.

Custody rights are restored to a parent if the orphan court recognizes that the reasons for termination no longer exist. If custody rights cannot be restored within a year from the date of termination, the orphan court makes a decision to file a lawsuit to terminate custody rights.
