Migrants Work Better and Smoke Less than Latvians – Opinion

“Employers must pay citizens of third countries more than residents of Latvia.” This labor market reality is called discrimination by Neatkarīgā commentator Maris Krautmanis.

Moreover, local job seekers do not always need to be notified: “If the team for sports games needs legionnaires who can score goals and make baskets, the regulations allow the process of attracting a foreigner to begin without a vacancy application to the State Employment Agency.”

“The registered unemployment rate in the state is currently not very high – it stands at 5.2%, which is 45,761 people. They are able-bodied but unemployed. Of course, preference should be given to locals, and the employer, along with potential foreign workers, should wait a bit to see that there will be no workers for the announced vacancies,” says Krautmanis.

“This can irritate employers because they know that citizens from third countries are often hardworking and productive, their hands move quickly, they do not go out for a smoke as often, while locals, with their supposedly virtuous work ethic, do not want to truly engage in such hellish tasks. This happens often...,” the commentator is convinced.

Mr. Krautmanis also reports that most of the migrants coming to Latvia from India are from the state of Punjab, and he hopes for their gradual adaptation to our driving style.
