Residents of Latvia Named the Reasons Why Teachers Quit Their Jobs

Residents consider the main reasons why teachers leave their jobs in schools to be overwork and emotional burnout, as well as relatively low pay, according to the results of a survey conducted by the young teachers' support program "Starp mums ir ķīmija" (Between Us is Chemistry) and the research company Norstat, reports LETA.

Overwork and emotional burnout were cited as the main reasons for teachers leaving by 70% of respondents, while relatively low salaries were mentioned by 58% of respondents.

The survey showed that residents also consider communication problems with students and parents, as well as a feeling of undervaluation of their work, to be important reasons for leaving the profession. Less frequently mentioned were insufficient support from colleagues and management, noted by 13% of respondents. Working conditions were indicated as a reason for leaving by 12% of respondents.

The organizers of the survey emphasize that attracting and retaining educators is a challenge for the entire education system in Latvia, especially in the fields of natural sciences and mathematics.

The survey, conducted in March 2026, involved 1,006 respondents aged 18 to 74.
