How many people with disabilities are in Latvia: new data

At the end of last year, there were 214,283 adults in Latvia who were assigned a disability, according to summarized information from the State Commission of Medical Examination of Health and Working Capacity, LETA reports.

Of these, 116,570 are women and 97,713 are men.

The largest number — 94,600 people — have been assigned the third group of disability. Another 93,832 people have the second group, and 29,239 have the first group of disability.

The Disability Law stipulates that individuals aged 18 years and older, until they reach the age required for the assignment of a state old-age pension, are assessed for functional limitations and their degree, as well as the percentage of loss of working capacity. The first group of disability is assigned in cases of very severe disability and loss of working capacity of 80–100%. The second group is for severe disability and loss of working capacity of 60–79%, while the third group is for moderately expressed disability and loss of working capacity of 25–59%.
