Ice Jam in the Pļaviņas Reservoir Decreases

Over the past 24 hours, the ice jam in the Pļaviņas Reservoir has decreased, according to information from the Aizkraukle municipality and the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC), reports LETA.

In the city of Pļaviņas, the river has partially cleared of ice, with ice accumulations remaining along the banks. The ice jam persists downstream from Pļaviņas. The water level in the Daugava River at Pļaviņas is approximately two meters lower than the maximum reached on March 17.

The ice is melting, and large ice floes are no longer coming from the upper reaches of the river. In Belarus and Russia, not all the snow has melted yet; however, rapid melting and heavy precipitation are not expected, so there is no risk of flooding.

Over the past 24 hours, the water level in the Daugava River in Latvia has not changed significantly, while it has decreased in the Pļaviņas Reservoir.

In most rivers of Latvia, the floodwaters are receding, and the water level is continuing to decline. In some rivers, including the Misa and Aiviekste, high water levels persist, and floodplains are submerged.

Meteorologists forecast that the weather will be dry over the weekend, with occasional precipitation expected next week; however, it is unlikely to be heavy and will not cause a significant rise in water levels in the rivers.

The water temperature in rivers, lakes, and the sea is between +1 and +5 degrees.
