The Saeima on Thursday adopted amendments to the education law that introduce a ban on the use of mobile phones in schools from the 1st to the 9th grade inclusive, except in cases where the teacher has allowed their use as part of the educational process.
Previously, this ban applied to students in schools up to and including the 6th grade.
The ban will come into effect on June 1, 2026, when the current school year will have already ended.
Amendments prohibiting the use of mobile phones in schools up to the 6th grade, unless necessary for mastering the educational program, were adopted in 2024.
