570 citizens and non-citizens of Latvia are stranded in the Middle East. In fact, there are more

In the consular register of the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, short-term trips to these countries have already been registered for 570 people, the Latvian foreign ministry reported.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs believes that the actual number of Latvian passport holders there may be higher, as not everyone registers and seeks help, LSM reports.

The largest number of Latvians is currently in the UAE. People are mainly requesting information about the situation and are interested in evacuation options.

For now, the safest option remains to stay in the host country and follow the instructions of local authorities, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs assures.

"The main thing is to be in a safe place. It is impossible to leave the country by air as the airspace is closed. Although it is open in Saudi Arabia and Oman, given the unstable situation, this is not considered a safe option. Theoretically, it is possible to leave the United Arab Emirates through Oman, but no one is recommending this right now — such a route is unsafe," noted the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Diana Eglīte.

Number of Latvians registered in the consular register:

United Arab Emirates — 478 Israel — 25 Oman — 21 Qatar — 22 Kuwait — 8 Saudi Arabia — 6 Bahrain — 5 Jordan — 5 Total: 570
