In Riga, plans are underway to reduce vehicle speed to improve air quality

The Riga City Council has approved a program to improve air quality for 2026–2030. The main goal of the document is to make the atmosphere in the capital cleaner through comprehensive changes: from the development of public transport to the reform of heating systems.

The authorities are focusing primarily on public transport. Plans include the construction of a dedicated lane on Dzelzavas Street, the expansion of the rail network in the suburbs, and the implementation of "smart" traffic lights that will prioritize buses and trolleybuses. The Riga agglomeration will also receive new transport hubs that will connect bus routes with railway stations. Additionally, the municipality intends to encourage the transition of taxis and car-sharing services to electric vehicles.

Particular attention is being paid to the historic center of Riga. A significant reorganization of traffic is being prepared for this area, which involves further reducing the allowed speed. Another unusual initiative to combat truck emissions is the development of ferry services between the left and right banks of the Daugava River to relieve bridges of heavy traffic.

At the same time, the city intends to combat pollution from private stoves and boilers, which remain a serious problem in areas such as Avoti, Grizinkalns, and Agenskalns. The authorities see the solution in expanding centralized heating and transitioning heating systems to renewable energy sources.

City residents will be able to monitor air quality in real-time: the program includes the creation of an open online platform with data from all monitoring stations.
