The head of the Riga Cemetery Administration, Gints Zela, stated that he has never encountered ghosts, but admitted that walking through a cemetery after sunset is indeed not advisable.
Gints Zela stated in an interview that during his time in office, he has never encountered anything supernatural.
"No, I have not met a single ghost. I have only heard stories, but nothing like that has happened to me personally," he noted.
Commenting on the common Latvian belief that one should not walk through a cemetery after sunset, he acknowledged that it can indeed be unsettling there at night. However, the reason is not mystical at all. According to him, he has been on the cemetery grounds after sunset several times. The main problem is the lack of proper lighting. It is impossible to illuminate the entire area where the gravestones and narrow paths are located, so there is a risk of tripping or getting injured.
Moreover, the danger may come not from "spirits," but from quite real people. From time to time, thefts and other offenses occur in cemeteries. "I would also say that it is not worth walking through the cemetery in the dark. There is nothing to do there. It is better to come during daylight hours," the head emphasized.
