Learning military affairs in a real way: a shooting range has opened in Latvia

A new training ground has appeared in southeastern Latvia, where the fighting spirit will be forged and top military-political training specialists will be educated.

The expenses for the development of the first phase of the "Sēlija" military training area amount to approximately 36.5 million euros. The training area is located between the Daugava River and the Latvian-Lithuanian border.

On Friday, a combat shooting zone was ceremoniously opened at the training area. A total of 156 square kilometers have been developed — about 61% of the planned area of the training ground.

President Edgars Rinkēvičs stated at the opening of the shooting range that the "Sēlija" training area is important, firstly, for the training of Latvian soldiers, and secondly, to become the largest training ground in the Baltics, where allies can learn and train.

The training area is already actively used: tactical and engineering exercises, movement of armored vehicles, flights of aircraft, and training of drone operators are taking place on its territory.

Starting from June 2025, a drone testing center will also operate at the training area.
