In the field of defense and security, residents of Latvia are most concerned about military conflicts at the borders of the European Union (EU) and uncontrolled migration flows, while other security-related risks worry them less than the EU average, according to the latest "Eurobarometer" survey.
According to a survey, 72% of residents of Latvia are concerned about active conflicts and wars near the EU, and on average, this concern is no lower across the EU. Uncontrolled migration flows, on the other hand, worry 70% of respondents in Latvia, which is higher than the EU average of 65%.
Terrorism concerns 58% of Latvians, while the average in the EU is 67%. Cyberattacks from outside the EU worry 57% of Latvian respondents compared to 66% of Europeans.
Natural disasters exacerbated by climate change concern 46% of Latvians, which is lower than the EU average of 66%.
Latvian respondents are also less concerned than the EU average about a range of security risks related to external dependence. The fact that the EU has to rely on energy supplies from non-EU countries worries 44% of Latvians, while the EU average is 62%. The EU's defense dependence on non-EU countries concerns 41% of respondents in Latvia compared to 59% on average in the EU.
Drone strikes on the territory of EU states or near it worry 59% of Latvians, while the EU average is 60%. Attempts from outside to influence elections or political processes concern 47% of Latvian respondents, while the EU average is 56%.
The autumn "Eurobarometer" survey was conducted in Latvia in November 2025. A total of 1,004 people were surveyed, while the overall number in the EU was 26,453.
