There is a risk of fish suffocation in the ponds of Latvia - ecologist

The risk of fish suffocation at this time should only concern pond owners, said ichthyologist Matiss Zhagars to the LETA agency.

In small, shallow water bodies, that is, ponds, new oxygen is not generated if they are covered by a thick layer of ice. If there are many fish in the water body, at some point the oxygen runs out, and suffocation begins, explained the ecologist. In such a situation, one should consider aerating the water — not just cutting a hole, but using special devices that enrich the water with oxygen.

Winter fish suffocation in natural water bodies occurs relatively rarely and is considered part of the natural ecological cycle, noted Zhagars.
