Currently, the main priority for the residential building on Bauskas Street in Riga, which was damaged as a result of the explosion, is ensuring safety and dismantling dangerous structures, said Andris Vikse, a representative of the building, to the LETA agency.
Without the completion of these works, it is impossible to continue the police investigation and ensure the safe operation of builders.
Residents have agreed on the security of the building and the use of funds from the reserve fund for reinforcement works within financial capabilities. At the same time, according to Vikse, the house is unable to ensure the completion of these works with its own resources and the reserve fund. After the dismantling of dangerous structures, the owners will need to address the scope of restoration, timelines, and financing model. Additional funding sources are being sought in parallel, including donations and other forms of support.
The authorized representative of the building noted that further restoration of the building will be a lengthy and complex process, the timeline of which cannot be accurately determined at this time.
The first stage involves the dismantling of dangerous structures and stabilization of the building; however, the duration of the work will depend on the situation, and an exact schedule has not yet been established. A decision on the future of the building can be made after a repeated technical assessment.
As previously reported, according to the conclusion of a certified construction expert, the residential building on Bauskas Street, which was damaged as a result of the explosion, is technically eligible for restoration. The local government has promised to finance the dismantling of dangerous structures and provide support for apartment repairs up to 10,000 euros each, but the decision to restore the building must be made by the meeting of the apartment co-owners.
The explosion in the five-story residential building occurred on January 2 due to an illegally damaged gas pipeline. As a result, the upper floors and the roof of the building collapsed, residents were evacuated, several people were injured, and two died.
