On Saturday morning, the air temperature at the meteorological station in Daugavpils dropped to -32 degrees Celsius, marking the strongest frost in the country since February 2012, according to data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LCSGM), writes LETA.

The Daugavpils meteorological station is located near the Rugeli reservoir, where the frost was weaker in most parts of the city. According to data from the Latvian State Roads, the air temperature dropped to -28 degrees Celsius on the A6 highway near the Daugavpils airfield — this is the strongest frost recorded by road sensors on Saturday night and in the morning.

The second lowest temperature recorded in the LCSGM observation network was early in the morning in Stalgen, where the "Jelgava" meteorological station recorded -28 degrees Celsius.

In most parts of the country, the air temperature dropped to -16 to -26 degrees Celsius, while in some areas of Kurzeme, the frost was weaker — for example, in Kolka it did not drop below -7 degrees Celsius.

Early in the morning, the temperature in the center of the capital was -16 degrees Celsius, at the airport it was -19 degrees Celsius, and in the suburbs of Riga, the frost reached -25 degrees Celsius.

In many areas of Vidzeme and Latgale, the sky is overcast, with light snow, fog, and frost noted in places.

During the Day, It Will Be Up to -15 Degrees

On Saturday afternoon, the air temperature will drop to -10 to -15 degrees Celsius, according to forecasts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LCSGM), writes LETA.

During the day, under the influence of an anticyclone, the sun will shine in most parts of the country, with clouds occasionally covering the sky, and no precipitation is expected.

A weak northeast and east wind will persist.

The maximum air temperature in most regions will be -10 to -15 degrees Celsius, while in northern Kurzeme it will be warmer — from -5 to -10 degrees Celsius.

In Riga, the day will be sunny and dry. A weak northeast and east wind will continue to prevail, and the air temperature is expected to be between -10 and -12 degrees Celsius.

The record cold for January 31 and for the entire month was recorded in 1956 in Daugavpils — -42.7 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologists predict that the night from Sunday to Monday will be even colder in some regions. Additionally, on Monday, several records may be broken, as the national cold record for February 2 is -30.8 degrees Celsius, set in 2012 in Zosena.
