Despite possible thaws on certain days, February in Latvia is generally expected to be several degrees colder than usual, forecasts indicate, writes LETA.

According to current data from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, the first week of February in Latvia will be eight degrees colder than normal, the second week will be approximately five degrees colder than the average for 1991–2020, and the second half of the month will be about two degrees below normal. Thus, the average air temperature in February is forecasted to be four degrees below the climatic norm.

Precipitation is expected to be very low at the beginning of the month, but the likelihood will increase after February 5. Not only snow is possible, but also freezing rain. There is also a possibility of increased winds and blizzards.

In the first two nights of February, temperatures in some places may drop to -30 degrees. In the following days, the frost will ease slightly; however, new cold waves are possible throughout the month.

Long-term forecasts often do not come true. For example, the seasonal forecasts published in December by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts indicated that January and February in Latvia and other parts of Europe would be warmer than normal.
