President: Counter-mobility measures at the border are not just a matter of railway tracks

Counter-mobility measures at the eastern border are not just a matter of railway tracks: they also involve roads and relevant infrastructure works, said Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs to reporters on Wednesday.

He noted that the responsible institutions are considering the eastern border of Latvia in a comprehensive manner and that the Ministry of Defense is currently working on this issue. "I believe that the military analysis conducted by the armed forces is very valuable," said Rinkēvičs.

The President emphasized that the main thing now is to implement the planned measures. Regarding the railway tracks, it is about developing a model of actions that would allow for a prompt resolution of this issue in the event of a crisis. "When we have a plan ready and clarity regarding the necessary resources, we will continue negotiations with the Baltic countries," said Rinkēvičs.

He also reported that a report on Latvia's overall progress in creating military infrastructure and implementing counter-mobility measures will be presented at the National Security Council meeting in February.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa stated that the issue of railway tracks in the direction of Russia was informally discussed in the government as well. According to her, it is necessary to find a way not to burden the National Armed Forces (NAF) with the issue of rails in case of an increase in threats. "If a threat arises, we must ensure that the railway becomes one of the tools in the hands of the NAF," Siliņa said.

She noted that the NAF primarily thinks about defense in the country, but other institutions can also take care of the infrastructure. "It is important for us that no part of the railway infrastructure falls into the hands of the enemy. We are currently developing a plan on how to achieve this," said Siliņa.

Defense Minister Andris Sprūds previously stated that a detailed plan is being developed that will ensure the immediate destruction of roads and railways at the eastern border if necessary.

"If the military threat increases, we do not rule out the dismantling of roads and railways," said the minister.
