Currently, one of Latvia's main advantages in the military industry is the development of drone technologies, and knowledge in this area is also necessary for the state for critical infrastructure, Prime Minister Evika Silinā stated to journalists on Wednesday.

At the Cabinet of Ministers meeting on crisis management, a decision was made to create a National Center of Excellence in the field of drones. As the Prime Minister pointed out, this decision is not about creating something new, as the Ministry of Defense already possesses capabilities related to both the development of drones and their use by the National Armed Forces.

She noted that discussions will continue on the development of other knowledge necessary for defense. "Today's decision is a decision that we are taking action; we have clear plans and strategies for the defense sector, but we are also mindful of civilian needs," said Silinā.

The Prime Minister emphasized that the principles of the center's operation will be similar to the principles of the institution for preventing incidents in the field of IT security, "Cert.lv," which advises other institutions. The drone center will be established under the Ministry of Defense.

"The main idea is to develop our defense capabilities in close connection with the military industry," noted Silinā.
