Last year in Latvia was the fourth warmest on record

The average air temperature in Latvia last year was +8.0 degrees, which is 1.2 degrees above the norm, according to summarized data from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre (LEGMC), reports LETA.

2025 was the 13th consecutive year in which the temperature was above the climatic norm (average temperature for 1991–2020) and ranked fourth among the warmest years since observations began in 1924. The top two spots are held by 2020 and 2024, when the average temperature reached +8.7 degrees.

The warmest temperature in 2025 was recorded in central Riga, where the average temperature was +9.1 degrees, while the lowest was in Alūksne at +7.0 degrees. The temperature deviation from the norm in different regions ranged from 0.8 degrees in Rucava to 1.5 degrees in Ainaži.

Nine months of the year were warmer than normal, while May, June, and August were cooler than usual. Throughout the year, only nine cold temperature records were recorded, while the number of heat records reached 396, the most occurring in January and March.

The most significant record was +28.4 degrees, recorded on April 18 in Skrīveri — such a high temperature had not been registered in April in Latvia before. Moreover, in May and June, the temperature did not reach such heights again.

March and January were the second and third warmest months on record, respectively, September was fourth, and December was fifth. May, however, was the 24th coolest on record and the coldest concluding month of spring since 1999.

The temperature amplitude in 2025 was 52.1 degrees. The lowest temperature of -19.7 degrees was recorded on February 20 in Daugavpils, while the highest was +32.4 degrees on July 3 in Mērsrags and Riga.

The average precipitation in Latvia last year was 707.2 millimeters, which corresponds to 103% of the annual norm. The wettest year was in Madona, where the total amount of rain and snow was 893.7 millimeters (128% of the norm). The least precipitation was recorded at the meteorological station in Jelgava — 508.5 millimeters (78% of the average for 1991–2020).

In January, April, May, June, and July, the amount of precipitation exceeded the norm, while in the other months it was below. January was the third wettest on record, and May was the sixth wettest May since 1924.

The maximum daily precipitation was 76.3 millimeters on April 19 in Lielpeči (Ogresgals). Particularly wet weather was observed from May to August in Latgale, Selija, and eastern Vidzeme.

The strongest wind gusts were recorded on October 12 in Daugavgrīva at 29.1 m/s and on December 30 in Ventspils. The highest average daily wind speed — 15.7 m/s — was recorded on January 1, 2025, at the port of Liepāja. Overall, the windiest day of the year occurred on December 28, when the average daily wind speed was 7.5 m/s.

The thickest layer of snow last year — 20 centimeters — was observed on January 12 in Rujiena. The last spring snow fell on May 16. At the end of the year, the maximum snow cover thickness was 13 cm in Alūksne and 15 cm in Liepāja.
