According to the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB), at the beginning of last year, Latvians made up 63.5% of the population of Latvia. Meanwhile, in the Rīga municipality, their share was less than half - 48%.
Compared to 2024, the share of Latvians in Latvia increased by 0.3 percentage points. At the same time, the total population decreased from 1,878,575 people at the beginning of 2024 to 1,860,565 people at the beginning of last year.
Proportionally, the largest population of Latvian nationality at the beginning of 2025 was in the Smiltene and Kuldīga municipalities. In these areas, Latvians made up 93.2% of the total population.
At the same time, Daugavpils had the lowest share of Latvians - 21.4%. According to the Central Statistical Bureau, at the beginning of last year, Latvians constituted less than half of the population in the Rīga (48%), Augšdaugava (43.8%), Rēzekne (48.1%), and Olaine municipalities.
