Five people died in Latvia over the week: a dangerous disease is declining, but another infection is on the rise

The epidemiological situation in Latvia in the 2nd week of 2026 indicates a high prevalence of influenza, and monitoring data confirm that the influenza virus continues to circulate widely in the community, bb.lv was informed by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

According to monitoring data, the incidence of influenza continued to decline last week, but it remains at a high level (268.5 per 100,000 residents; previously — 316.4 per 100,000 residents).

Influenza cases were registered in all 10 monitoring territories, with the highest incidence still noted in Jelgava (944.9 cases per 100,000 residents) and in the Jekabpils region (590.7 per 100,000 residents). As in previous seasons, higher influenza incidence is observed among children under 14 years old.

At the same time, following the holiday period, there was a sharp increase in cases of other acute respiratory infections — the number of visits to outpatient facilities increased by 2.2 times compared to the previous week.

A significant increase was also noted in cases of pneumonia, the intensity of which exceeded the figures of both the previous week and the pre-holiday period, with a pronounced increase among the elderly (65 years and older).

The Center for Disease Prevention and Control reports that in the 2nd week of 2026, the share of positive tests for Covid-19 also increased, reaching 7.5% (compared to 5.4% the previous week).

The number of patients with Covid-19 hospitalized in hospitals has increased, and last week five deaths were also registered among patients with confirmed Covid-19 infection.
