Considering demographic trends, the Daugavpils municipality will soon need to review the network of preschool educational institutions.
In recent years, the number of children in preschool institutions in the city has significantly decreased due to declining birth rates. Data from the Daugavpils Department of Education, Youth and Sports shows that over the past four academic years, the number of children in preschool institutions has decreased by 18.3%, or by 790.
In the 2022/2023 academic year, 4,308 children attended the city's preschool institutions, while in the 2023/2024 academic year, this number decreased by 6.7% to 4,019, and in the 2024/2025 academic year, there was a further decrease of 7.8% to 3,705 children. In the current 2025/2026 academic year, the total number of preschool children is 3,518, which is 5.1% less than a year ago.
Data from the Daugavpils City Registry Office shows that in 2019, there were 662 newborns registered in the city, but by 2025, this number has decreased by 34.7%.
Analyzing the birth rate indicators, it can be expected that in the coming years, the number of children in the city's preschool institutions will also significantly decrease, the municipality reports. The decrease in the number of children is also influenced by population migration to other municipalities and abroad.
