This year, traffic rule violations on the streets of Riga are recorded not only by speed radars and video cameras placed in police cars but also by red light cameras at intersections. They recorded 24,000 violations!
The police promise to continue significantly increasing the list of equipment, but there is criticism that fines are applied to collect money rather than to encourage drivers to drive more sensibly.
"Analyzing the statistics, we see that over the year, 100,000 decisions on penalties related to speeding violations were made, 24,000 violations recorded by red light cameras, and about 40,000 other violations recorded by mobile cameras. If we look specifically at red light cameras, the intersection of Gustav Zemgala gatve and Brivibas street is the most problematic, where drivers very often do not comply with traffic light signals and remain stopped at the intersection," says Ieva Lukaza-Apalupa, a representative of the Riga City Council police.
The police conclude that since the introduction of red light cameras, driving culture is beginning to change, and drivers are more often considering compliance with the rules. It should be taken into account that there will be more intelligent equipment for monitoring traffic on the streets of Riga. The fines imposed by the capital's municipal police go to the city budget after payment. It is still unknown how much this year's violators have contributed to Riga's treasury - statistics will be summarized at the beginning of next year.
