A petition has been launched on the public initiative portal 'Manabalss.lv' calling for the abolition of the vehicle operation tax for individuals.
As a representative of the initiative, Janis Innus stated. To compensate for the abolished tax, he proposes to include it in the already existing fuel excise tax. This would mean that the tax for maintaining a vehicle would be paid proportionally to the distance traveled and the amount of fuel consumed, rather than as a fixed annual fee, Innus explains.
In his opinion, this would achieve a more useful and fair principle – the amount paid would directly depend on the intensity of road network usage. Such a model, where the tax is included in the fuel price, has already been implemented and proven effective in Lithuania and Estonia, emphasizes the initiative's representative.
He also highlights that this would reduce the administrative burden, and the tax payment for individuals would become automatic, as it would be included in everyday fuel expenses.
