Electric trains during Christmas and New Year will operate on a holiday schedule, the passenger train company Pasažieru vilciens (PV), operating under the brand Vivi, informed the LETA agency.
Electric trains will operate on a holiday schedule from December 24 to 26, December 31, and also on January 1 and 2.
In turn, diesel trains will operate on the Friday schedule on Tuesdays — December 23 and 30, and from December 24 to 27, as well as from December 31 to January 3 — on the Saturday schedule.
PV urges passengers during the holiday period to pay special attention to the train schedule in the direction of Gulbene, Madona, Daugavpils, and Valmiera.
At the same time, in order to ensure the possibility of reaching the most remote final stations of the railway routes during the holidays, some trains will run further than usual. In particular, several trains will operate to Indra, Valga, as well as Gulbene, where it will be possible to continue the journey on the Aluksne narrow-gauge train.
The current train schedule, taking into account all changes, is published on the PV website vivi.lv and in the mobile application.
It was previously reported that last year a total of 19.445 million passengers were transported by rail in Latvia, which is 13.5% more than in 2023, and 5.3% more compared to the pre-pandemic 2019.
It was also reported that in mid-December 2023, PV began passenger transport on electric trains produced by the Czech company Škoda Vagonka. Prior to this, the trains underwent extensive testing and trials on the railway infrastructure of Latvia. Despite this, in December 2023 and January 2024, the new trains regularly faced various technical problems.
The company PV was established in 2001 by separating internal passenger transport from the functions performed by Latvijas dzelzceļš (LDz). Previously, PV was 100% a subsidiary of LDz, but in October 2008 it was transformed into a state company.
