Last year, no new trees were planted in most areas of Riga

Last year, no trees were planted in most areas of Riga, as stated in the "Report on the Implementation of the Sustainable Development Strategy of Riga until 2030 and the Development Program of Riga for 2022–2027," reviewed this week by the Housing and Environment Committee of the Riga City Council, reports LETA.

According to the report, the number of trees planted by the municipality increased in 2024. Based on the information collected from the departments and the company "Rīgas meži", it was concluded that a total of 1123 trees were planted by the municipality.

It is also noted that it is important to implement nature-based solutions in the urban environment, which not only reduce heat intensity but also improve air quality, promote biodiversity, and enhance the city's resilience to climate challenges. Therefore, in 2024, 851 trees were planted in the urban environment, of which 695 were in parks.

The most new trees were planted in the recently created "Skanste Ponds" park — 670 trees. In the central part of the city, 80 trees were planted last year.

In Bolderāja, 23 trees were planted, in Sarkandaugava — 20, in Teika — 18, and in Grīziņkalns — 12.

In several districts — Imanta, Agenskalns, Tornakalns, Ziepniekkalns, Avoti — only a few trees were planted, while in most areas, no new trees were planted.
