Several benefits for families with children will be increased next year

On Wednesday, the Saeima adopted a number of amendments to laws that will increase support for families with children starting next year.

The bills are related to the draft law on the state budget for 2026 and the budget framework for the next three years.

Amendments to the law on state social benefits stipulate that henceforth, the child care allowance will be paid until 1.5 years instead of the current two years. At the same time, this allowance is planned to be increased from the current 171 euros per month to 298 euros per month for a child under one and a half years old. It is expected that for children born before November 2 of next year, the allowance will continue to be paid until the child reaches the age of two, and it will remain at 42.69 euros as before.

Changes will also affect the state family allowance for children who are studying. It is planned that the allowance for a child aged 16 to 20 years can be received even if the child is studying full-time at a college or university and has not entered into marriage. Thus, families with adult children studying at universities or colleges will have the allowance reinstated, and it will last until the children turn 20 years old. Currently, the allowance is paid for children studying in secondary or vocational schools.

Starting next year, the one-time childbirth allowance will also be increased - it will amount to 600 euros. Currently, this allowance is 421.17 euros.

In addition, a larger allowance for guardians for child maintenance is planned: for a child under seven years old, it will be 390 euros per month instead of the current 215 euros, and for a child aged seven to 18 years, it will be 468 euros per month instead of the current 258 euros.

Benefits paid for adopted children and for fulfilling guardianship duties will also be increased. Starting in 2026, the reward for caring for an adopted child will be 1,041 euros per month - which corresponds to 70% of the average salary in the country, taking into account social security contributions. If the payment was already assigned in 2025 and continues into the next year, the amount will be up to 956 euros per month. Currently, the minimum amount of such a reward is 171 euros per month.

The reward for fulfilling guardianship duties will be 298 euros per month starting in 2026 instead of the current 54.07 euros. Amendments to the law on state social insurance stipulate that mandatory insurance contributions for pensions, unemployment, and disability will be paid from the state budget for non-working guardians.

The adoption allowance has also been increased: starting in 2026, for children under seven years old, it will be 195 euros per month instead of the current 107.5 euros, and for children aged seven to 18 years, it will be 234 euros instead of the current 129 euros. The one-time reward for adopting a child will increase from 1,422.87 euros to 2,433 euros.

Amendments to the law on maternity and sickness insurance stipulate that next year, parental benefits for working parents will remain at the same level - 75%.

To improve material support measures for families with children, additional funding of 42 million euros is planned for next year, and 24.1 million euros is allocated for the support of children receiving out-of-family care.
