Cars must be equipped with winter tires. What other conditions are there for winter driving?

From December 1 to March 1, passenger vehicles with a total weight of up to 3.5 tons are required to be equipped with tires designed for winter conditions, the Road Traffic Safety Directorate (CSDD) informed the LETA agency.

Passenger cars must be fitted with winter tires specifically designed for use in snow and ice conditions, marked with the "mountain and snowflake" symbol.

As explained by CSDD, the international designation "mountain and snowflake" indicates that the tires meet certain criteria and are suitable for driving on snow, ice, and icy roads.

At the same time, drivers should consider that in the upcoming winter period, if the vehicle is equipped with tires only marked "M+S" but without the new designation "mountain and snowflake," such tires will not be considered compliant with winter requirements. The use of such tires during the winter period is not permitted.

CSDD emphasizes that when using used tires that have been in service during previous winters, it is important to ensure their technical condition. The minimum tread depth for winter tires is four millimeters; however, as this threshold is approached, the tires will soon need to be replaced, as approximately after a month they will no longer comply with traffic regulations, and their use may pose a danger to both the driver and other road users.

A visual inspection of the tires is also necessary to ensure there are no damages or cracks that may have occurred due to improper storage. Additionally, it is not recommended to use winter tires that are more than five to six years old, as the rubber loses its properties over time. At the same time, it is prohibited to use both studded and non-studded tires on the same vehicle, the directorate adds.

Studded tires are allowed to be used from October 1 to May 1.

CSDD is a state-owned joint-stock company. The directorate registers vehicles in Latvia, issues driver's licenses, conducts vehicle inspections, and provides other services. The capital owner of the directorate is the Ministry of Transport.
