We will be rich, the language and culture will survive. If we are poor - we will assimilate” - Bank of Latvia

Researchers from the University of Latvia presented a concept for the development of Latvia until 2050, based on demographic, economic, and cultural forecasts. The document outlines three scenarios — optimistic, neutral, and negative — which differ in growth rates and levels of prosperity.

The rector of the University of Latvia, Gundars Berziņš, stated that the country needs to agree on a strategy in key areas: human capital, education, technology, security, and cultural development. He emphasized that "the person must remain at the center," and issues of health, birth rates, and language are directly related to the economic strength of the state.

"Latvian culture and language can only exist when Latvians are wealthy. If we are poor — we will assimilate," noted Mārtiņš Kazaks, president of the Bank of Latvia.

Economist Jānis Ošlejs suggested prioritizing labor productivity growth: according to him, only a wealthy and competitive society can maintain social stability and cultural identity.

Prime Minister Evika Siliņa acknowledged that the main challenge remains demographic trends and labor shortages, which may require changes in the economic model.
