The Cabinet of Ministers on Tuesday supported the initiative of the Ministry of Defense to create the General Peter Radzins Professional Secondary School – to strengthen patriotic education for youth and provide military education opportunities for teenagers.
It is planned that up to 30 students will be admitted to the school in the next academic year.
"The establishment of the General Peter Radzins Professional Secondary School is an important step in strengthening the security of the Latvian state. We are giving young people the opportunity to receive a quality education while simultaneously acquiring military skills and values that shape responsible, brave, and capable leaders," said the Minister of Defense of Latvia, Andris Spruds.
The Ministry of Defense intends to create a secondary school as a subordinate institution that will offer licensed educational programs in the field of national defense.
In the new educational institution, the study of general subjects will be combined with the acquisition of military skills and values, allowing students to develop leadership abilities, a sense of responsibility, and physical skills.
During their studies, students will be provided with a scholarship, accommodation in a service dormitory, meals four times a day, and necessary material support. Graduates of the special school will have the cadet stage of the National Defense Academy of Latvia credited to them, as well as service in national defense.
After the report is approved on Tuesday, a school director will be appointed, who will be tasked with forming a team to register the educational institution and create the school's curriculum. An identical school is currently operating in Kandava.
