The Riga municipality has allocated 24.4 million euros for winter maintenance of streets and sidewalks, reported Kristaps Kauliņš, director of the Department of External Space and Mobility of the Riga City Council.
17 million euros have been allocated for street maintenance, and 7.4 million euros for sidewalk maintenance.
He added that if the winter is not harsh and snowy, the funds may not be fully utilized, and the saved amount could be directed towards street repairs.
According to Viktor Armidinsh, head of the maintenance department of the Department of External Space and Mobility, 79 units of machinery will clear roads and bridges of snow in winter, 43 units will handle sidewalks, and ten people will perform manual labor.
The department also has 24 additional units of machinery for snow removal.
Today, at a press conference, Riga's mayor Viesturs Kleinbergs expressed hope that all services would be prepared and that winter would not catch Riga off guard.
