During the reconstruction, the overpass on Altonavas Street will not be able to open for regulated one-way traffic, acknowledged Viesturs Kleinbergs (Progressives), the chairman of the Riga City Council, in an interview for the Latvian Television program "Morning Panorama," reports LETA.
This conclusion was made during an additional examination. According to the mayor, there was hope that the bridge could be used for one-way traffic — in the morning towards Riga, and in the evening in the opposite direction.
He also reported that the procurement for the reconstruction has been completed, and a contract will be signed. The overpass is expected to be ready by 2028, the mayor emphasized, adding that this is the deadline.
As previously reported, at the end of September, the municipality informed that monitoring of cracks on the overpass on Altonavas Street has been ongoing for almost a year. In this regard, it was decided to commission experts to assess possible traffic organization models based on the collected data.
The overpass has been closed to motor vehicles since December 7 of last year. The decision to close it was made based on the recommendations of specialists outlined in the technical report on crack monitoring.
The Riga municipality continues to regularly monitor the technical condition of the overpass and perform its current maintenance.
According to the study, the preliminary cost of reconstructing the overpass is estimated at 2.5 million euros.
The bridge on Altonavas Street was built in 1910 and has reportedly completely exhausted its operational resource.
