Actress Zane Jančevska spoke out against the mass construction of wind farms, which, in her opinion, destroy unique Latvian landscapes and the coastal sea. For this, she was accused of ‘spreading Kremlin myths’ and supporting Russia. She shared this on Facebook.
“It hurts that parts of Latvians, who are not directly affected by wind turbines near their homes, don’t care about what happens to our nature, and don’t care about the malicious epithets that ill-wishers throw at others. Have we become so stupid?” the actress wrote under a shocking post.
According to Zane, one morning her neighbor called her and informed her that on the radio (the specific station was not named) Jančevska was called a “Kremlin supporter” because of her social media posts. At first, the actress did not even understand what it was about — she has never supported Kremlin politics in word or deed.
“I only said one thing: we must protect our beautiful Latvian nature and sea — that is what we still have left. And I believe that! My family suffered greatly from the Soviet regime; I have never had the slightest reason to support Kremlin politics,” emphasized Zane Jančevska.
After her post, hundreds of supportive messages appeared online. Here are just a few of them:
Beata Aboliņa: “This is how it happens. Anyone who advocates for Latvian nature, for their right to live in a beautiful and harmonious rural environment, is immediately labeled a Kremlin agent. This only proves that material values are placed above all human ones, and those who implement this wind farm invasion simply have no valid arguments for why the Latvian people need these wind turbines. The only argument left is ‘Kremlin agent.’”
Sandis Vežis: “The new trend — if you are against the interests of the clique, you are immediately labeled a Putinist. An emotionally charged accusation — without any argumentation. Look how far we have gone with pseudo-patriotism if we can manipulate like this left and right! P.S. You will hear this argument ‘you are for the Russians’ if you are against wind farms, if you are against the Istanbul Convention, etc. It plays on feelings of guilt and dualism. If you think differently — you are the enemy! This is the ‘freedom of speech’ in Latvia! (occupation).”
Ivars Levandovskis: “The primitive politics of the liberal left — to call everyone who is against migration, homosexuality, and the sale of Latvia Kremlin supporters!”
Lienē Bušujeva: “A very convenient tool for manipulation right now. If the authorities don’t like it — you are immediately a Kremlin Putinist!”
Dzintra Rumbiniece: “Soon, everyone who disagrees with the opinion of ‘New Unity’ and ‘Progressives’ will be considered Kremlin supporters…”
Zane Jančevska and hundreds of her supporters believe that the accusation of ‘pro-Russian’ has become a universal way to silence anyone who opposes the large-scale construction of wind farms in Kurzeme and on the Baltic Sea coast — even if a person has spent their whole life protecting Latvian nature and Latvian interests.
