The Riga District Court in Jūrmala ruled that the lawsuit of entrepreneur Evgeny Gomberg against Riga City Council member Liana Lange (National Alliance) for the protection of honor and dignity was partially granted, stating that Lange must publicly apologize and pay compensation and legal costs amounting to 1062 euros, LETA reports citing the court.
The lawsuit was based on the fact that Lange referred to the entrepreneur as an agent of the Committee for State Security (KGB) in her post on the social network Facebook. This false statement, according to the plaintiff, affected his honor and dignity. Despite the plaintiff's request, Lange did not retract this statement.
The entrepreneur also considered Lange's assertion that he allegedly blackmailed the Saeima to be false. The lawsuit noted that there was indeed a legal dispute between the entrepreneur and the Saeima, which was eventually resolved, and the Saeima granted the plaintiff's request.
Gomberg believes that his honor and dignity were also affected by Lange's statement that he threatens Latvia.
According to the entrepreneur, Lange deliberately spread defamatory information about him.
The Riga District Court partially granted the lawsuit, ordering Lange to publish an apology to the entrepreneur on Facebook within ten days from the date the decision comes into effect and to ensure that the post remains publicly accessible for at least 72 consecutive hours.
The court also ordered Lange to pay monetary compensation of 100 euros, as well as legal costs of 962 euros.
At the same time, the part of the lawsuit concerning the obligation to refute the information that "the entrepreneur is an agent of the KGB, blackmailed the parliament using the sculpture of Lāčplēsis, threatened Latvia," as well as the part of the claims for an apology and additional compensation of 2 euros, was dismissed.
The court's decision can be appealed in the Riga Regional Court.
On her Facebook page, Lange stated that she does not intend to apologize to the entrepreneur and that the decision will be appealed.
