Starting from January 1 of next year, it is planned to reduce the maximum area of the house that a family can build on their own without involving construction companies, from the current 400 to 200 square meters. The aim of this innovation is to reduce the shadow economy in the construction sector, reports the program "900 seconds" (TV3).

Starting from January 1, 2026, in the case of constructing a residential house, the permitted area of the object (from 400 m² to 200 m²) that can be built independently, without involving a registered developer, will officially be reduced.

In response to the question of whether they personally support such changes in Latvia's building regulations, about a third (30%) of residents aged 18 to 65 answered affirmatively (11% — "definitely yes", 19% — "probably yes").

At the same time, nearly two-fifths (39%) of respondents stated that they do not support such changes (16% — "probably no", 23% — "definitely no").

15% of those surveyed indicated that they had not been informed about these changes.

16% did not express a specific opinion on this issue.

Almost one in ten (9%) residents of Latvia aged 18 to 65 indicated that these changes in building regulations would personally affect them.

Two-thirds (68%) believe that these changes will not affect them.

About a quarter (23%) did not provide a definite answer.
